Have you ever had one of those moments—while scrolling through social media, you see a post about foster care, and something inside you stirs? Or maybe, on your morning commute, you keep thinking about starting a prayer group at work. These moments, they might not be as random as you think. They could be God nudging you, trying to lead you toward your divine assignment. It’s all about cultivating a little holy curiosity.
That’s what Moses discovered on what started as just another ordinary day tending sheep. He noticed something unusual: a bush that burned but wasn’t consumed. Instead of walking past, he chose to investigate. “I will go over and see this strange sight,” he said (Exodus 3:3). That simple choice to stop and take a closer look at what God was doing not only transformed Moses’ life but the entire course of Israel’s history.
In the same way, your journey toward discovering your purpose may begin with a holy curiosity—a curiosity that prompts you to pause and notice what God is doing in your life. It’s a choice to lean in and listen when God is trying to show you something.
What Is Holy Curiosity?
Holy curiosity is more than just a passing interest in God’s presence in your life. It’s a mindset of curiosity that intentionally looks for and actively pursues God’s nudges in your heart and mind. This spiritual alertness helps you recognize that seemingly ordinary moments are rarely coincidences. It’s God trying to get your attention and direct you toward your purpose.
Think about those thoughts that keep coming up during your prayer time: the ministry needs that continue to capture your attention, or the person you keep running into around town who needs encouragement. These aren’t coincidences. They might be divine invitations for you to take notice, like Moses did at the burning bush.
4 Simple Ways to Cultivate Holy Curiosity
So, how do you cultivate this spiritual alertness in your everyday life? Here are four practical ways to begin.
- Start journaling. Each week spend 15 minutes reflecting on these three questions: What caught my attention repeatedly this week and why? Which causes or people do I feel constantly drawn to help? Who keeps appearing in my life, and how might my skills help them? Patterns in your answers will often point to your purpose.
- Pray for clarity. Ask, “God, what are You trying to show me through this situation or moment?”
- Read the Bible. When you read, ask yourself, “What does God want to show me through this verse?”
- Respond to holy discontent. Holy discontent is that stirring in your soul when something feels deeply wrong or unfinished. That burden you can’t ignore could be a directional signpost pointing toward your purpose and using the spiritual gifts God gave you. Perhaps you feel burdened for foster children, inspired to mentor that younger colleague at work, or prompted to invite other widows over for dinner. Follow these nudges and see where He leads.
Take the Next Step
Like Moses at the burning bush, your holy curiosity can ignite a journey that not only transforms your life but impacts the kingdom. Take a step today. Pause, reflect, and trust Him to guide you. Each small act of faith brings you closer to the extraordinary plans He has prepared for you.
